Duolingo Tamil: There's No Course — Here's the Best Alternative

Short answer: Duolingo does not have a Tamil course. If you have searched for "Duolingo Tamil" and come away confused, that is why — there is no Tamil course for English speakers on Duolingo, and there never has been. What Duolingo does have is an English course for Tamil speakers, which teaches English to people who already speak Tamil. That is the opposite of what most people searching for this are after.

This page is an honest comparison of the two products people usually end up weighing: Duolingo, a broad gamified platform covering 40-plus languages, and Learn Tamil AI, a single-language app for the spoken, colloquial Tamil people actually use. They are built for different jobs, and for most of those jobs Duolingo is excellent — it just cannot help you with Tamil.

Does Duolingo have Tamil? The full answer

No — not as a language you can learn. Here is what actually exists on Duolingo, checked in September 2026:

• Tamil for English speakers: does not exist. There is no Tamil course on Duolingo, and no announced plan to build one.
• English for Tamil speakers: exists, and has since June 2016. This teaches English, with Tamil as the language of instruction.
• Other courses in Tamil: exist. After Duolingo's April 2025 expansion, people using the app in Tamil can also study Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Mandarin.
• Recent updates: still no Tamil. In 2026 Duolingo extended nine of its largest courses to advanced (CEFR B2) content. Tamil was not among the languages added at any level.

So when a search result seems to promise "Duolingo in Tamil", it is almost always one of three things — the Tamil interface, the English course for Tamil speakers, or a years-old forum thread asking for a Tamil course.

Why hasn't Duolingo built a Tamil course?

Almost certainly scale, not neglect. Duolingo builds courses where the learner numbers justify the investment, and far fewer English speakers study Tamil than Spanish or Japanese. A reasonable business call — it just leaves Tamil learners without a course.

Content depth: colloquial Tamil vs. the standard register

Duolingo's courses teach the standard register of each language, which is the sensible default when you are building for tens of millions of learners. Its Arabic course, for example, teaches Modern Standard Arabic — the formal written variety — rather than any of the dialects people speak at home. That is a legitimate choice, and for Arabic learners aiming at media and literature it is the right one. But applied to Tamil it would produce the classic problem: months of correct study, then a family dinner where you follow almost nothing.

Learn Tamil AI starts from the opposite end. Every phrase is the one a Tamil speaker would actually use, taught with native audio, so what you practise is what you will hear in Chennai, in a WhatsApp voice note, or across the table from your in-laws.

Learning style: drills vs. saying things out loud

Duolingo's gamification is genuinely the best in the category. XP, leagues and daily quests are the reason millions of people open a language app at all, and if a habit loop is what has been missing for you, that is a real strength worth saying plainly.

Learn Tamil AI is built around a narrower loop: short daily lessons with streaks to keep you coming back, spaced repetition so vocabulary sticks, and speaking out loud with AI pronunciation feedback on every attempt. Script: how soon can you actually say something?

Duolingo teaches native scripts early — its Hindi course, the closest Indian-language comparison, starts you on Devanagari in the first units. That builds real reading ability, and if you want to read Tamil signage, menus and literature you will need the script eventually.

The cost is time before your first sentence. Tamil's script is learnable, and it is less intimidating than it looks, but a beginner who has to decode letters before speaking often stalls in week two. Duolingo's free tier is genuinely good: full course access, supported by ads and a limited "hearts" system that caps how many mistakes you can make in a sitting. Super Duolingo removes ads and the hearts limit for around $12.99 a month or roughly $84 a year, and the Max tier with AI roleplay sits near $29.99 a month. There is a family plan at about $119.99 a year for up to six people.

Learn Tamil AI is free to download on iOS and Android so you can try it, and full access to the lessons is $7.99 a month or $69.99 a year. Both stores price in your local currency, so the amount you see in India or elsewhere will differ from the US figures above.

Duolingo's free tier is more generous in scope than ours. It just does not cover Tamil — not on the free tier, not on Super, not on Max.

Where Duolingo wins

Plenty of places, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise:

• Breadth. More than 40 languages, plus music, maths and chess. Nothing focused on a single language can match that, and if Tamil is not your only target language, Duolingo covers ground we never will.
• Habit design. Leagues, quests and reminders are best in class at getting people to come back. That is not a gimmick — consistency is most of language learning.
• The free tier. You can complete an entire Duolingo course without paying. Very few learning products are that generous.
• Polish and scale. A large team, a big community, years of iteration, and apps that work well on web as well as phones — we are iOS and Android only, so if you learn at a desk that is a real drawback.
• If you speak Tamil and want to learn English, Duolingo's English course for Tamil speakers is the better tool, and it has been running since 2016. We do not teach English.

Our own limits are worth saying in the same breath: Learn Tamil AI does one language and nothing else, has no web version and no live human tutors, and is not the right starting point if you want to read classical Tamil or sit a formal proficiency exam. The one thing Duolingo cannot do is teach you Tamil.

Who should choose Learn Tamil AI

This app is a good fit if you are:

• Learning for a partner or in-laws. You want to follow the conversation at dinner, not read a newspaper editorial.

• A parent raising Tamil-speaking kids abroad who wants to keep up with them.
• Someone who wants to speak, sooner. If reading and writing come later, the spoken-first route gets you talking earlier.

Choose Duolingo instead if you are learning a language it covers, if you need a web version, or if you are a Tamil speaker who wants to learn English.

Nothing about Duolingo's recent roadmap suggests that is about to change.
